How To Submit Your Content to the GPAS Website

Photos, promos, papers, and more: anything you want can be shared with the Notre Dame GPAS community using our new content submission form! (must be signed in with your ND Google account). We know forms can be scary and confusing sometimes, so here’s a walk through exactly how to get your content featured on our website.

How it works:

Posting on the website is a great way to get involved with GPAS media, with no commitment required. After you submit, we’ll edit, tag, and post your content as necessary. We’ll also include author attribution on all the photos and articles we post, so feel free to flex your artistic skills and writing prowess as much as you like; the credit is all yours! Here’s the things you can submit using our form right now:

Event Flyers

That beautiful flyer you made deserves more than just getting taped to the stairwell door. Put it up on our Events page so people anywhere can see it! Upload a PDF in portrait orientation, and we’ll add it to the rotation of upcoming event listings on our site.

Announcements

Exciting new projects, awards, updates, collaborations, anything! Share your big news with the GPAS community and get some writing practice while you’re at it! You choose the title, write your article, and even submit photos if you like. Your article will be posted on our News page for all to see!

Photos

Show off your photos from GPAS or other Physics & Astronomy Department events! We’ll collect the images you upload and put them all together in an Event Recap article. Our upload form is a little finicky right now because it can only handle you uploading 10 photos at once. If you’ve got more than that, just fill out the form again!

Student & Faculty Spotlight

There are a lot of awesome people in our department. Spotlight gives you a chance to introduce them to us all and showcase what makes them great! First, choose someone you think is especially awesome. Share their accomplishments with us, just let us know why you think they’re so cool. Once they’ve been nominated, we’ll reach out to them to learn more and write an article that shows why they deserve their very own Spotlight.

Paper Spotlight

A journal club for everyone! Did you or someone you know submit a paper recently? Was there an abstract on arXiv that struck your fancy? Want the opportunity to write a summary of a classic paper in your field? Maybe you’ll help others understand it better. Maybe you’ll even help *you* understand it better! Give us some information about the paper, and a summary in your own words, and we’ll feature your article on our News page.

Science Policy Initiative

The Science Policy Initiative (SPI) is a student-run group focusing on issues at the intersection of science and society.  We encourage dialogue on campus around policy issues, strive to improve our science communication skills, and serve as a professional development resource for students interested in science policy careers.  SPI hosts a number of events throughout the year to serve our campus community. We have regular monthly meetings to discuss current events and recent developments in science policy. We host guest speakers from both on- and off-campus to speak about their careers and viewpoints on science and society. We meet with our local, state, and national legislators to communicate the importance of their support for science. COS-JAM Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Fellow Annual Meeting

The inaugural College of Science – Joint Annual Meeting (COS-JAM) for Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows will take place in Jordan Hall on Thursday, May 4, 2017. This will occur in conjunction with the Office for Postdoctoral Studies, Graduate Career Services, and Office of Grants and Fellowships, who will have representatives available to offer development counseling, CV advice, and information about research funding opportunities. The intent of the Graduate and Post-Doc COS-JAM is to highlight the achievements of graduate and postdoctoral research, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, and provide mentoring about integrative careers in science.

All graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in the College of Science are invited to participate in Graduate and Post-Doc COS-JAM by sharing their original research with faculty and students, in either an oral or poster format. Please indicate if you have a preference for a given format following your abstract. Research may have been conducted on or off campus, and mentored by faculty from the University of Notre Dame and/or at other universities and colleges.

Please discuss the content of the abstract with your PI prior to submission. Approval by the PI will be needed before an abstract is accepted for presentation at Graduate and Post-Doc COS-JAM.

Ethical Leaders in STEM

Ethical Leader in STEM: What will your impact be?

 

Ethical Leaders in STEM is an experiential program for Notre Dame STEM PhD students who will be in their 3rd or 4th year of study in academic year 2017-18 to develop and explore their aptitude for communication, mentoring, and leadership.

 

This is a great program that in 2015 our own Matt Hall was a participant.  It comes with an additional $1400 stipend on top of your regular pay and 3-course credits. Check it out at graduateschool.nd.edu/professional_development/ethics/ethical-leaders/

Applications are due March 15. Specific details about the program are found in the application.

Social Responsibilities of Researchers

 

 

SRR LogoThe Social Responsibilities of Researchers program in the Reilly Center aims to equip and motivate emerging scientists and engineers to be cognizant of the conne

ctions their research has with society, adaptive in steering their research in light of these, and able to engage the public and policy makers in an effort to optimize its impact and relevance. In doing so, these researchers will become leaders and models of ethical engagement for their peers and students.

Applicants must be in their first or second year, and applications are due February 13th. You will get a $1400 stipend, a total of three credits and a certificate of completion. Not only will you learn a lot, but it is a great thing to add to your CV.

3 Minutes, 1 Slide…..3 Minute Thesis (3MT) Information Session

An 80,000 word thesis would take 9 hours to present; would you be able to explain yours in just 3 Minutes?  The 3MT competition is practice for life.  It takes skill and practice to articulate your life’s work in 180 seconds, and it is a skill that every graduate student should hone.  Now it the chance to perfect your talk. The 3MT challenges doctoral candidates to present a compelling spoken presentation on their research topic and its significance in just 3 minutes. The exercise cultivates your academic, presentation, and research communication skills.  Attend this session to learn more about the competition and the professional development workshops surrounding it.

1st Prize is $2,000.  2nd Prize is $1,500.  People’s Choice Award $1,000.
